About Us

Rob Kennard

Rob is an active climber and has been an instructor for over 38 years, with many first ascents and early repeats of Dorset's climbs to his name.

Rob has accumulated a colossal wealth of climbing experiences ranging from alpine mountaineering, multi-pitch traditional climbing to high-level sport climbing. His incredible in-depth knowledge of the routes in Dorset is unique, and he uses this knowledge to select the right routes to fulfil the climbers’ needs, whether it is to educate, challenge and stretch or to build confidence.

As an instructor Rob has experience of working with adults and children in a group environment as well as in a one-to-one coaching setting. He creates a great atmosphere to enable, enthuse as well as enhance and validate knowledge. His use of empathy and enthusiasm creates an opportunity to inspire performance in a safe and affable way.

He has an extensive knowledge of training techniques that enhance climbing performance and is happy to work with you in how to build onto pre-existing regimes or create training for you to achieve your aims.

Rob studied Geology, Coastal Geomorphology and Ecology at University, so a day out with him will give you great insight into the wonders of the Jurassic Coast!

Rob is also a qualified PPE inspector, and is an ERCA trainer.

Alex More

Alex has been climbing and instructing for over 30 years. Alex is the founder of Dorset Youth Climbing Academy, and is also head of P.E at a sports college.

Keiha Dhruev

Keiha learned to climb on the Dorset Cliffs in his early teens, and is now based in Devon, where he can be found bouldering on Dartmoor on sunny afternoons or deep water-soloing. He has 17 years of experience as an instructor

Although he enjoys competition climbing, for him the real joy of climbing is being outside with friends having a laugh and challenging himself. This ethos is also applied to his instruction; you will perform best on the rock when you’re enjoying yourself.

Gary Vinson

Gary has been working in the outdoors for many years gaining various qualifications in land and water based activities, he currently works part time at a local college instructing and coaching in outdoor education and adventure across a broad activity range such as climbing, kayaking, bushcraft and team building.

In his spare time he can be found climbing across the Dorset coast, sea kayaking or up in the mountains. He continues to develop his skills and experiences and is currently working towards his Mountain Instructor award.

Kelly Evans

Kelly has been climbing for over 17 years and instructing for the past 15. She lived and worked in north Wales before heading to the sunny south coast and has also instructed abroad. She enjoys working with children, young people and adults alike in a variety of activities. She loves climbing on the Swanage sea cliffs and is currently working towards her MIA.

Jerome Cooper

Jerome started his climbing life 17 years ago in the Peak District but moved south when looking for more adventure and the lure of the imposing Swanage sea cliffs beckoned. He’s a qualified Mountaineering Instructor and has experience of climbing throughout the UK and abroad. He considers himself a trad climber but he recently managed to climb his first 8a sport route and is fully committed to his personal progression in the sport!

What people say about us

Thanks very much for the climbing morning yesterday. My son had a great time! He was so keen to carry on and come back for more which was exactly what I was hoping for. So the morning was really successful, thanks.

Reading Wall Climber

I was really struggling with my power until a session with Portland Climbing showed me the way. I believe it made all the difference in helping me to resolving the latest Balkans crisis: foreign dignataries have told me they are in awe of my one-arm pullups and campusing power.
